Dental Bonding
Stuart, FL

When a tooth becomes decayed, fractured, chipped or discolored, a process called bonding can be used for repair. Here at Colin M. McKinney, DMD, we can help with the bonding process to restore your smile to its former state. With the bonding process, a composite resin that is the same color as the teeth is used to repair the issue. The process of bonding is less difficult than veneers and can complete in one visit.

Affordable Cosmetic Procedure

Bonding is an affordable cosmetic procedure that can be used to repair imperfections within the teeth. If you have a cracked or fractured tooth, the bonding process can repair the tooth. Decayed and discolored teeth can also benefit from bonding. With the composite resin material, we can create the shape needed to restore your tooth. The new tooth will then be polished, and it will match your other surrounding teeth.

For the most part, bonding is used to improve the look of teeth when they are chipped or discolored. Repairing such imperfections can make a patient increase their self-confidence, feeling better about their smile.

Preparation

With bonding, there is no preparation needed. When it comes to dental procedures, many require anesthesia or some type of prep to get started. Bonding has no requirements. You can simply arrive at your appointment to get started.

In some cases, bonding is used instead of amalgam fillings, to fill a tooth. If this is the procedure you are visiting for, then anesthesia would be needed in this instance.

The Process

When you have a bonding appointment, the process is quite simple. We will look at the shades of your teeth and select a composite resin that matches your other teeth color as closely as possible. Once the color has been selected, the tooth will then be etched to be able to adhere to the resin. A conditioning liquid will be placed lightly on the tooth to help the bonding material work properly.

Once the tooth is ready, the dentist will apply the resin. The resin will be molded to the tooth, so the right shape is created. The resin is also smoothed to create the look of a natural tooth. The dentist then hardens the material.

Once the material has hardened, the dentist will trim and shape the tooth as needed. The material is polished so that the sheen of the tooth matches the surface of your other teeth. The overall process can take from 30 minutes to one hour. If more than one tooth is being repaired, multiple visits may be needed.

It is recommended that you avoid tea, coffee, and cigarettes, among other substances, as they can stain the resin. Such substances should be avoided fully within the first 48-hours of the procedure. Be sure to brush teeth often after and attend regular cleanings to ensure your teeth look their very best, protecting the new teeth that you now have.
